The Bryan shelter says most of the 46 dogs and cats it took in this week are lost pets, and it is reminding owners about microchips and Brazos County licenses.

Aggieland Humane Society in Bryan is asking Brazos County pet owners to look through its lost-and-found listings after taking in 46 dogs and cats in a matter of days, most of them believed to be lost pets.

WTAW reported Wednesday that the shelter said the 46 animals arrived within two days. Executive Director Katrina Ross told KBTX that a rush like this is unusual for this time of year and puts heavy strain on staff and volunteers. At one point, she said, 16 cats came in over the span of a couple of hours.

The new arrivals include adult dogs and cats as well as bottle-fed kittens that need care around the clock. Animal care manager Harlee Gerke told KBTX that each animal is vaccinated and dewormed when it comes in, and that when cats arrive back to back it is hard to process them quickly.

The shelter closes at 6 p.m., she said, and some staff members have stayed as late as 8 p.m. to finish caring for the animals.

What the shelter is asking

  • Owners missing a pet can check the shelter's lost-and-found page at aggielandhumane.org/view-lost-and-found-pets. Residents who are not missing a pet can look as well, in case they recognize a neighbor's animal.
  • Every dog, cat and ferret living in Brazos County must have a county pet license. The tag costs $17 a year and requires proof of a current rabies vaccine. A licensed pet found by animal control or a neighbor can be traced through a 24-hour phone line printed on the tag.
  • The shelter also recommends microchipping so lost pets can be returned home faster.

Aggieland Humane also relies on foster homes for kittens too young to be adopted, which must be at least 8 weeks old. The shelter is at 5359 Leonard Road in Bryan and can be reached at 979-775-5755.
