Blinn College District trustees on Tuesday, Oct. 20, gave the go-ahead to a Sport Management Associate of Science, a two-year program aimed at students who want to work on the business side of athletics, recreation and fitness.
The degree still needs a sign-off from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. If that comes through, Blinn expects to start classes in spring 2027, taught in person at its Bryan and Brenham campuses, the college said in its announcement.
What the program covers
Blinn describes the degree as a blend of kinesiology and business. Classes named in the announcement range from Foundations of Kinesiology and Introduction to Recreation to Principles of Financial Accounting and Principles of Managerial Accounting, with directed electives that students choose based on their career plans.
The college draws a line between this program and its existing kinesiology pathways, which focus on the science of human movement. Sport management, by contrast, is about planning, budgeting and running athletic programs, events, facilities and teams.
"This degree opens new opportunities for students who love sports and want to turn that passion into a career," said Dr. Shelly Peacock, assistant academic dean for Blinn's Division of Arts, Kinesiology, and Agriculture.
The degree is built for transfer. Blinn lists Texas A&M University, Tarleton State, Sam Houston State, Texas State, the University of Houston and Prairie View A&M among possible destinations for students who go on to a bachelor's degree in sport management or a related field.
In making the case for the program, the college cited U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projections of about 16,800 yearly openings through 2035 for people who plan meetings, conventions and events, and roughly 91,100 a year across entertainment and sports occupations.
