Next door in Bryan, the last pieces of a nearly two-mile trail around Travis Bryan Midtown Park should be finished this fall, the city said in a parks update posted Oct. 19.
The 150-acre park, built where the city's municipal golf course and lake used to be, is getting a boardwalk and the final stretches of a multipurpose trail 12 feet across. Construction is also under way on Midtown Legacy Park, a playground meant for visitors of all ages and abilities.
The city says it should open around the turn of the year with 119 play pieces, over 12,000 square feet of shaded space, and equipment that children using wheelchairs or walkers can reach, along with room for strollers. The Darwood Foundation gave $2 million toward it.
"Our outdoor offerings are a vital part of our community's quality of life," Mayor Bobby Gutierrez said in the city's announcement.
Neighborhood parks
Several smaller parks got upgrades this year, according to the city:
- New playgrounds at Claude Scurry and Copperfield parks for ages 5 to 12, and at Ibarra Park for ages 2 to 5.
- Shade covers over play areas at Sue Haswell and Tanglewood parks and over Greenbrier Park's fitness station.
- Two shaded playgrounds being built at Villa West, replacing equipment in use for about 25 years. The city expects them done before 2027. Villa West also has new lighting and a resurfaced covered basketball court.
- Concrete walking paths at the Morris "Buzz" Hamilton Dog Park, replacing granite paths that kept washing out in heavy rain.
- A new deck on the large pedestrian bridge at Austin's Colony Park, repaired railings along Turkey Creek Trail, and new tables, benches, grills and trash cans at Williamson and Castle Heights parks.
- LED lights at the Copperfield Park tennis courts.
