Mike Feinman, who owns the Fazoli's restaurant on Harvey Road, told KBTX that reshaping College Station's Harvey District will take more than the city's effort alone. The district covers the stretch of the city between Highway 6 and Texas Avenue.

Feinman attended this week's city working group session on mobility and connectivity in the district. "How do we establish the long term vision for that area that includes the businesses, includes the housing, includes the transportation," he said, describing much of what the group has discussed.

He said business owners want the corridor to be seen as a place people go to shop and eat, not just a quick way through town, and that the group has talked about making better use of the land around Wolf Penn Creek Park. He described the overall aim as turning Harvey Road from a corridor built to move traffic into "an attractive, accessible, economically vibrant destination."

Feinman also wants owners of apartment complexes in the area at the table, saying their residents deserve a voice in the plan. He suggested tax breaks for the first few complexes that take part. "Why can't we make it worth their while? Then the others will have to follow suit because they won't be able to compete," he said.

He also liked the "uptown" label that came up during the discussion and said marketing the corridor as "Uptown College Station" could bring in new businesses and help the shops and restaurants already there.

The working group meets next on Nov. 10. That session is set to cover the district's character, public spaces, parks and trails, and opportunities in smaller sections of the area.
