Texas A&M Team Converts PVC Waste Into High-Performance Lubricants

A multidisciplinary research team has developed a method to transform low-recycling-rate polyvinyl chloride into high-performance lubricants, with findings published in Nature.

Researchers from Texas A&M University, Virginia Tech, and the California Institute of Technology have developed a new approach to convert polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic waste into high-performance lubricants. The study, led by Dr. Ali Erdemir, was recently published in the journal Nature.

PVC is one of the most produced plastics globally, with approximately 60 million metric tons manufactured annually for household and industrial products. Despite its widespread use, it has a recycling rate of less than 1%. The new research demonstrates a method for transforming this challenging waste stream into polyalphaolefin lubricants that exhibit exceptional friction and wear performance.

The transformation occurs through chemical reactions performed at relatively low temperatures. This process is described as an efficient and economically viable alternative to traditional lubricant production methods. The resulting lubricants show versatility, higher yield, and potential for advancing sustainable approaches across the plastic and lubricant industries.

Dr. Erdemir, a University Distinguished Professor and Halliburton Chair in the J. Mike Walker ’66 Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M, led the tribology research efforts. His group investigated the lubrication mechanisms and performance of the materials. Researchers at Virginia Tech developed the PVC conversion process, while the California Institute of Technology team contributed molecular modeling and simulations.

The research group includes postdoctoral scholar Dr. Seungjoo Lee and Ph.D. student Gugyeong Sung.

"We did not know if the upcycled product would have any lubrication properties or compete with existing synthetic lubricants," Erdemir said. "Our research at Texas A&M demonstrated their extraordinary lubrication performance, making them highly attractive for broader industrial applications."

The team estimates that millions of metric tons of PVC waste could potentially be transformed into high-value lubricants through this method. The discovery aims to address growing plastic waste challenges while advancing lubrication technologies for industries worldwide.
