Texas A&M University will establish the Autonomous Robotic Metallurgist Materials Innovation Platform (ARM-MIP), a new self-driving laboratory for metals research. The facility will be located at The Texas A&M University System RELLIS Campus in Bryan, a site that also hosts the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station and the U.S. Army Transformation and Training Command’s central testing hub.
The project is funded by a six-year, $24.9 million grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). ARM-MIP is designed as a national user facility where universities, national laboratories, and industry members can conduct alloy-discovery campaigns using robotic systems and artificial intelligence. It is the fifth platform in the NSF’s Materials Innovation Programs and the first devoted to metals.
The facility aims to serve more than 200 users annually. In its first year, ARM-MIP plans to process 50 alloys per month, scaling to more than 200 alloys per month by the sixth year of operation.
Dr. Raymundo Arróyave, the Chevron Professor II in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and director of ARM-MIP, stated that the project seeks to democratize access to advanced research facilities and accelerate alloy development.
Texas A&M President Dr. Susan Ballabina noted that the establishment of ARM-MIP reinforces the university’s role as a national leader in research addressing critical needs. Vice Chancellor and Dean of Texas A&M Engineering Dr. Robert H. Bishop added that housing the facility at Texas A&M positions students and faculty to collaborate with leading metal alloy researchers from across the nation.
