Jack Johnston gave College Station a record-setting start to cross country season.

The senior set a men's 5K course record of 14 minutes, 48.3 seconds as Texas A&M swept the Aggie Opener's team titles Friday, September 4, at Watts Cross Country Course. Texas A&M meet report

Freshman Laney Barnes finished second in the women's two-mile race in 10:48.8 during her A&M debut. Alexandra Fox and Megan Roberts followed in third and fourth, giving the Aggies three runners among the first four finishers.

The team races were close. A&M's men finished with 33 points to Houston's 38, while the women won with 34 to Houston's 42. Johnston's record drew attention, but those margins underline why every scoring runner mattered.

Local fans get another opportunity September 11 at the Texas A&M Invitational. The men run an 8K at 8 a.m., followed by the women's 5K at 8:35 a.m., again at Watts.

Two trophies. One record. Longer races await.
