Hawks rally past Spurs 123-116 in preseason opener at Frost Bank Center

San Antonio led by as many as 23 points before Atlanta outscored the Spurs 30-21 in the fourth quarter of Thursday's exhibition. Asa Newell scored 16 for the Hawks; Dylan Harper had 16 for the Spurs.

Spurs let a big early lead slip

The San Antonio Spurs opened their preseason schedule at Frost Bank Center on Thursday, Oct. 8, and lost 123-116 to the Atlanta Hawks before 18,354 fans after building a lead that reached 23 points.

San Antonio controlled the first quarter 39-20. Atlanta answered with 42 points in the second quarter, trimming the Spurs' halftime edge to 69-62, and the Hawks stayed within two at 95-93 after three quarters.

Atlanta takes over late

The Hawks won the fourth quarter 30-21 to finish the comeback. Atlanta's largest lead of the night was 12 points.

Ball security was a gap: the Spurs committed 21 turnovers to Atlanta's 10. The Hawks also had 30 assists to San Antonio's 20.

Leaders

Asa Newell scored 16 points for Atlanta, going 5 of 8 from the field and 5 of 6 at the line. Kingston Flemings added 15 points and five assists, and Dyson Daniels pulled down 11 rebounds.

Dylan Harper led San Antonio with 16 points and four assists. Stephon Castle and David Jones Garcia scored 14 points each, and Keldon Johnson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Victor Wembanyama played 17 minutes and finished with nine points and six rebounds.

The game was an exhibition and does not count toward the regular-season standings.
