SpaceX will build a semiconductor plant in Grimes County, immediately east of College Station, in a first phase the state puts at more than $16.8 billion and 3,000 jobs.
Gov. Greg Abbott and SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk announced the project, called the Terafab, this month. The site sits near Iola, about 18 miles from College Station, and Anderson, about 23 miles out.
The scale
The complex is planned at 100 million square feet. That would place it among the largest manufacturing buildings in the world.
The design is vertically integrated, meaning chip design, logic, memory and advanced packaging would sit under one roof rather than being split across suppliers and continents, which is how most of the industry currently works.
The chips are intended for Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots and its Cybercab driverless vehicles, and for processors in SpaceX's planned satellite-based data centers.
"Texas is where big ideas grow even bigger," Abbott said. "The first-of-its-kind Terafab facility will accelerate chip production in Texas at an unprecedented scale."
Musk said the project is "bringing cutting-edge manufacturing to America, creating thousands of high-paying jobs in the Lone Star State."
What the public is putting in
The state has extended a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant. The project also qualifies under the Jobs, Energy, Technology and Innovation program, the state's school-tax incentive framework.
Both Grimes County school districts have signed on. The Iola Independent School District board approved an agreement with TeraFab AI, LLC, and Abbott submitted positive determinations on the JETI agreements in July.
"The Board determined that providing the requested tax incentives for this project was in Iola ISD's best interest," Iola ISD Superintendent Jeff Dyer said.
Anderson-Shiro ISD Superintendent Sarah Borowicz called it "one of those defining moments in the life of a school district."
Grimes County Judge Joe Fauth III said connecting a company like SpaceX to an industrial site in the county "makes all the sense in the world."
