As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for their upcoming preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, crucial roster decisions are being made. The competition for the backup quarterback position has intensified, particularly between Sam Howell and Joe Milton, with Howell starting the previous exhibition game against Seattle and Milton stepping in during the second half.

Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer indicated that Howell's consistent practice performance earned him the starting role, while Milton showed promise during his playing time.

Concerns have also been raised about right tackle Terence Steele, who has been seen as a potential liability on the offensive line. Coach Schottenheimer noted the need for Steele to improve his consistency following his display against the Los Angeles Rams. Offensive coordinator Clayton Adams highlighted the importance of providing support to Steele as he enters his seventh year in the NFL.

In addition, running back Jaydon Blue, a former University of Texas player, is currently dealing with a shoulder injury, which raises doubts about his availability for the game. Blue had been in competition for the backup role behind Javonte Williams, alongside Phil Mafah and Malik Davis, but struggled in the first preseason game.

Furthermore, safety Jalen Thompson drew attention after a notable occurrence during joint practices with the New Orleans Saints, where he was taken down by a Saints player. As a starter, Thompson is not anticipated to play in the preseason games, making this incident a rare chance for him to interact with players from another team.

Details regarding the Cowboys' roster decisions and player statuses remain forthcoming as the team readies for their matchup against the Cardinals.
