College Station Parks and Recreation is pairing Halloween with Texas Arbor Day this week. Its free Trunk or Tree-t event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at the Wolf Pen Creek Festival Site, with the Texas A&M Forest Service as a partner.

The headline giveaway is trees. Families can take home a free seedling while the supply holds, and the city lists six varieties: gum bumelia, cedar elm, bur oak, live oak, sugarberry and desert willow.

What else is planned

The parks department describes the evening as family-friendly, with games, children's activities, prizes and treats alongside short lessons on what trees do: the habitat they provide, their effect on health and the work to protect them. Free face painting and free photos are on the schedule, and food vendors will sell meals and snacks.

Several public agencies and volunteer groups plan to set up tables, according to the city's announcement. They include the Texas A&M Forest Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Brazos Valley chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists, the Post Oak chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas, Books from Birth, Citizens for Climate Action and Texas A&M's Student Society of American Foresters.

Planning a visit

Leave pets, alcohol and glass at home; none are permitted. Parking is free at the Meyer Senior and Community Center and at Post Oak Mall, and accessible spaces are near Colgate Drive.

The city timed the event because Halloween and Texas Arbor Day fall within a week of each other this year. According to the parks blog, Mayor John Nichols plans to issue a proclamation at Thursday's City Council meeting naming Nov. 6 Texas Arbor Day.

Questions go to the parks department at 979-764-3486.
