The Grimes County Historical Commission has started work on several historic buildings at Historic Anderson Heritage Park in Anderson, KXXV reported on Monday.
The first project is the Steinhagen Museum. It is getting a new foundation and a new porch, and the commission has voted to take out walls so the building returns to its original dogtrot design, commission President Kathy Cave Wells told the station. Wells said electricity was to be added at the site before the end of October so the foundation crew can begin.
The commission also plans to restore the Steinhagen log cabin in the park, a job Wells said it hopes to finish within about a year. The park's old stage will be torn down and replaced with an amphitheater once the commission receives two remaining bids and picks a contractor, she said.
Steve Storey, who leads American Legion McCluskey Post 640, told KXXV that the post plans to plant a Liberty Tree at the park to mark America's 250th anniversary, with a ceremony planned once water service is connected. Storey said he was most looking forward to seeing the museum open.
