Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach, a College Station nonprofit, has started a monthly support group for women who are expecting or caring for a newborn or young child.
Sessions of the group, called The Village, are held on the second Monday of each month from 10 to 11 a.m. at the organization's center at 550 Fraternity Row. Registration is not required, KBTX reported. The organization says on its website that all of its services are provided at no cost.
How the group works
Andrea Buck, who directs outreach for the nonprofit, told KBTX that staff noticed more people feeling isolated and wanting connection with other mothers. The sessions are meant for women at any point in the process, from a first pregnancy to the months after giving birth to a second or third child.
A nurse and a doula lead each meeting, fielding practical questions such as how to handle lost sleep or a baby's sudden fever. Buck described the sessions as mothers swapping "tips and tricks," still "facilitated by a nurse and a doula who has some of that expertise." Lactation help is also available from the group's nurse.
"Every child you have, it's a different experience for different reasons," Buck said.
