Drivers headed south on State Highway 6 through College Station will lose their usual way onto Harvey Road this weekend.

The Texas Department of Transportation will shut the Harvey Road exit on the southbound side at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and stay closed until 6:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26. During that stretch, southbound traffic bound for Harvey Road should get off at the University Drive exit instead, according to the agency's construction page for the Big 6 widening.

Tonight and Friday night

The weekend closure follows several overnight shutdowns that TxDOT posted for this week. All run from 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.

  • Wednesday, Oct. 21: The southbound main lanes close completely between University Drive and Texas Avenue. Traffic will be sent off at the Harvey Road exit and can get back on at the Texas Avenue and Deacon Drive intersection. Southbound entrance ramps just north of University Drive, Harvey Road, Southwest Parkway and Harvey Mitchell Parkway also close. On the northbound frontage road, the left lane is closed between Switch Station Road and Harvey Road, along with the northbound-to-southbound turnaround at Harvey Road.
  • Thursday, Oct. 22: The same northbound frontage road lane closure and Harvey Road turnaround closure are scheduled again.
  • Friday, Oct. 23: The northbound exit ramp to Texas Avenue closes so crews can pour concrete. TxDOT says drivers can reach Texas Avenue by turning left onto Southwest Parkway.

In Bryan on Wednesday night, crews are also setting barrier on the northbound frontage road between William J. Bryan Parkway and Sam Rayburn Drive, which closes the northbound exit to Martin Luther King Jr. Street and Old Reliance Road. Drivers can use the William J. Bryan Parkway exit to reach those streets.

Why Harvey Road

The Harvey Road interchange is one of the larger pieces of the project. TxDOT's plans call for widening the bridge to carry an added main lane each way, more approach and turn lanes, and new southbound collector-distributor lanes that keep merging traffic apart from through traffic. The existing U-turn lanes at Harvey Road are to stay.

The Big 6 covers 11.5 miles of Highway 6, from State Highway 21 in Bryan to William D. Fitch Parkway in College Station, and will take the main lanes from two to three in each direction. Fluor Heavy Civil won the $671 million contract in March 2025, and construction started Dec. 1, 2025.

For the next six months, TxDOT says, two main lanes will stay open in each direction while most of the work happens on the main lanes, including temporary pavement and retaining walls. The agency posts the closure list on the project page, where drivers can also sign up for email or text updates.
