Waffle House is the restaurant brand College Station residents most want to see in town, according to the first round of results from a city economic development survey.

Grow College Station, the city's economic development arm, asked residents a single question for its Shape College Station survey: what restaurant brand would you like to see in College Station? The city's open data portal shows 3,156 submissions between Aug. 20 and Oct. 1, naming 148 different restaurants.

Waffle House drew 424 of those submissions. In-N-Out Burger was close behind with 381, followed by Hat Creek Burger Company with 262 and Grimaldi's Pizzeria with 235.

The top 10

1. Waffle House, 424 2. In-N-Out Burger, 381 3. Hat Creek Burger Company, 262 4. Grimaldi's Pizzeria, 235 5. The Cheesecake Factory, 160 6. Pappadeaux Seafood, 152 7. P. Terry's Burger Stand, 119 8. Pappasito's Cantina, 103 9. Culver's, 87 10. P.F. Chang's, 58

Just outside the top 10 were Din Tai Fung with 52 and La Madeleine Bakery & Cafe with 51. Paris Baguette, Babe's Chicken Dinner House and Luby's each drew about 40.

What the results mean

The survey is a wish list, not a list of restaurants that are coming. Grow College Station told KBTX the answers will help its economic development team understand which businesses and amenities residents want as the city grows. The results do not say whether the city has contacted any of the companies named.

The count is of submissions, and the city's data does not show how many separate people took part.

The city describes Shape College Station as a quarterly feature that asks residents about their ideas and priorities, from restaurants and shops to attractions, services and amenities. Grow College Station said more questions are coming.

The full, searchable results are posted at grow.cstx.gov/shape. The page notes that its data refreshes every 24 hours.
