Williamson Park in Bryan will get a relocated, fully shaded playground by early 2027

Bryan's council unanimously backed swapping out the worn Williamson Park playground, moving it away from drainage trouble and covering it with a shade canopy, with the new equipment due by late February 2027.

Bryan, College Station's neighbor, is replacing the aging playground at Williamson Park and moving the new one to a different spot in the park, after City Council members unanimously signed off on the project, KXXV reported.

The current equipment is about 25 years old, possibly older, according to Marcus Walker, Bryan's parks operations manager. He told the station the equipment has become an eyesore and that accessibility at the playground is now a concern.

A better-drained site

Water flowing across the ground has been running into the existing play area and causing drainage problems, Walker said. Rather than rebuild in the same place, the city plans to set the new unit on a better location within the park that he said should also be easier for visitors to get to.

The new playground will come with its own standalone shade canopy. Walker said it will cover "100% of the square footage" of the play unit.

Bryan expects the new equipment to be in place by late February 2027, according to KXXV. The station's report did not give a cost or name a supplier.

Part of a wider round of park work

Williamson Park also has a walking trail, a skate park, a basketball court, restrooms and pavilions. This year it got new grills, benches, picnic tables and trash cans, and it was among five parks where city crews put in 100 trees from the Bryan Noon Lions Club, the city said in an Oct. 19 parks update.

Shade has been a recurring piece of Bryan's recent park spending. Covers were finished this year over play and fitness areas at Sue Haswell, Tanglewood and Greenbrier parks, and two shaded playgrounds are being built at Villa West Park to replace equipment that had been in use for about 25 years, according to the city.
