A&M Consolidated will stop at halftime of Friday's home game to honor the four football teams that turned the Tigers into a statewide name more than three decades ago.
Former players and coaches from the 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992 teams will be introduced on the field, with trainers and family members, during the Nov. 6 game against Hendrickson at Tiger Field, 1801 Harvey Mitchell Parkway South, College Station ISD said in a district announcement this week. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
Four seasons, 56 wins
Before that stretch, the program had reached the postseason just one time in its first 46 years, according to the district. Ross Rogers, who coached and served as athletic director, took over in 1988, and his first team finished 2-7-1.
The run that followed:
- 1989: A 10-0 regular season and the school's first playoff trip since 1960. Consol's last four postseason games that year were played at the Astrodome, and it lost in the state final to finish 14-1.
- 1990: Another unbeaten regular season, ending with a state semifinal loss to Austin Westlake. Record: 14-1.
- 1991: With four returning starters, Consol beat previously unbeaten Carthage 35-16 at the Astrodome for the Class 4A state title. Record: 14-2.
- 1992: A third state final in four years, a 28-24 loss to Waxahachie. Record: 14-2.
Altogether the four teams went 56-6. The district says no Texas high school program had strung together four consecutive seasons of 14 wins before. The 1991 championship came 35 years ago this season.
