Home cooks who want to put up their own holiday staples can start Wednesday, when the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service opens a five-session canning series at its Brazos County office in Bryan.

The series, titled Preserving the Harvest: Stocking the Pantry, is hands-on and open to both first-time and experienced canners, according to details published by KBTX. Each class runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the extension office, 4153 County Park Court.

What each class covers

  • Wednesday, Nov. 4: turkey and cranberry sauce
  • Dec. 9: pie filling, plus beef stew with vegetables
  • Jan. 19: spicy pickled beets and pickled yellow pepper rings
  • Feb. 23: collard greens and sweet potatoes
  • May 3: salsa and jalapeño jelly

A single class costs $30, and the full series is $100. Each session is capped at 20 people, and organizers recommend signing up early. Registration and payment are handled online at tx.ag/PreservingtheHarvestClasses. The class dates also appear on the extension service's Brazos County events calendar.

Alzheimer's lunch and learn

Later in the week, the Brazos County Health District will host a one-hour session called "10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's Disease" from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at 201 N. Texas Ave. in Bryan.

Flora Williams, a family and community health agent with AgriLife Extension, will lead it. The program is offered by AgriLife's Family and Community Health unit with the Alzheimer's Association, and it covers how to tell ordinary memory changes from possible warning signs, how to raise concerns with a loved one, why early diagnosis helps, and where to find assessments and support.

Seats must be reserved by phone by Thursday, Nov. 5. The extension office can be reached at 979-823-0129.
