Residents who live outside the Bryan and College Station city limits can meet the firefighters who respond to their homes at a free open house later this month.

All four of Brazos County's emergency services districts, along with the fire departments that serve them, will set up together for "Inside the Firehouse" from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Brazos Center. A formal presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

What visitors will see

Firefighters will have trucks and equipment on display, and organizers say the evening is meant to explain how fire and emergency response works in the county's unincorporated areas. Topics include how an emergency services district differs from a volunteer fire department, how crews are staffed and trained, mutual aid between departments, fire prevention, home safety and opportunities to volunteer.

For people living in an area covered by a county district, organizers said the night is a chance to meet their own fire chief, find out which department is dispatched to their address and learn what the emergency services district line on their property tax bill pays for.

Family friendly

Children are welcome. Organizers are encouraging young visitors to come in firefighter costumes and pose for photos with crews and trucks during the evening.

Admission is free, and no registration was mentioned in the announcement.
