Astros drop 11-7 in Philadelphia

The Houston Astros fell to the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-7, on Wednesday, September 9, at Citizens Bank Park. The visiting Astros struggled to contain the home run production, allowing four long balls throughout the contest. The loss drops Houston to a 74-72 record, while the Phillies improve to 82-64. The game drew a crowd of 38,642 fans.

Phillies build early lead

Philadelphia established a commanding lead in the third inning. The home team scored four runs in that frame to take a 4-0 advantage. Juan Soto doubled to center field to drive in a run.

Then, Paredes hit a home run to left center that traveled 409 feet, scoring two more. Diaz followed with a single to center that brought in another run. The Astros answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third, tying the game at 4-4.

Late-game surge decides it

The Phillies regained the lead in the fourth inning. Smith hit a home run to center field that went 416 feet, driving in two runs to make it 6-4. The Astros pulled within one run in the fifth inning when Turner homered to right center for 374 feet.

However, the Phillies erupted in the sixth inning. Sosa singled to right field to score a run. De La Cruz walked, scoring another.

Then, Schwarber hit a grand slam home run to right field that traveled 408 feet, scoring four runs to give the Phillies an 11-6 lead. The Astros managed one more run in the seventh inning when Paredes singled to center field to score a run, but it was not enough to change the outcome.

Pitching performance

Cristopher Sanchez earned the win for the Phillies. He pitched six innings, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs while striking out three batters. He did not walk anyone.

Hunter Brown started for the Astros. He pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs while striking out seven batters. He did not walk anyone.

Bryan King took the loss for Houston. He pitched no innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs. AJ Blubaugh pitched one-third of an inning, allowing one hit and two earned runs while walking one batter and striking out one.
