A Late Spark in a One-Sided Contest
For the visiting Southern Jaguars, Saturday night at TDECU Stadium offered only a fleeting moment of offensive life before being swallowed by a dominant Houston performance. The Jaguars managed to put points on the board for the first time in the third quarter, but it was not enough to stem the tide against a Cougars team that controlled the game from the opening whistle.
The final score stood at 77-6, with Houston (2-0) proving too much for Southern (1-2). The lone bright spot for the visitors came late in the third period when quarterback Wyatt McCauley connected with Wydell Clark Jr. on a 79-yard pass. That play accounted for six of Southern’s total points after their extra-point attempt was blocked by Jonathan Dimas.
Houston’s Early Dominance
Houston wasted no time establishing control, scoring 28 points in the first quarter alone. The Cougars’ offense was efficient and relentless. Conner Weigman orchestrated the initial onslaught, connecting with Patrick Overmyer on a 9-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. He followed that up by finding Amare Thomas for an 8-yard strike.
Ground game support came from Re'Shaun Sanford II, who punched it in from 9 yards out, and Makhi Hughes, who scored from 1 yard away. Jonathan Dimas successfully kicked all four extra points, capping the first quarter with a 28-0 lead.
Second Quarter Surge
The Cougars continued their offensive rhythm in the second period, adding another 21 points to their tally. Weigman threw two more touchdown passes, including a 43-yard bomb to Koby Young and a short one to John Hebert. Keisean Henderson also stepped into the passing role, delivering a 7-yard touchdown pass to Young, who finished with two receiving scores. The half ended with Houston leading 49-0.
Third Quarter Continues and Final Push
Houston extended their lead further in the third quarter with three more touchdowns. Keisean Henderson contributed on the ground with a 54-yard run, DJ Butler added a 9-yard rushing score, and John Hebert found the end zone again via an 8-yard rush. By this point, the game was effectively over, though Houston continued to accumulate points.
In the fourth quarter, Luke Carney scored on an 8-yard run, bringing Houston’s final total to 77. Southern’s offense struggled to gain traction throughout the day; McCauley completed just two of three passes for 85 yards and one touchdown. Armariyan Asberry carried the ball three times for six yards.
Houston’s Conner Weigman was the standout performer, completing nine of twelve passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns. Zane Smith led the rushing attack with 69 yards on ten carries. Koby Young caught three passes for 54 yards and two scores. The Cougars improved to 2-0 with the victory, while Southern dropped to 1-2.
