Kay Granger, Pioneering Texas Politician, Passes Away at 83

Kay Granger, who made history as the first Republican woman from Texas elected to the U.S. House, passed away on August 2, 2026, at the age of 83. Her death was announced by House Speaker Mike Johnson, although no cause was provided.

Granger's political journey included several significant milestones. She became the first female mayor of Fort Worth in 1991, serving until 1995. In January 1997, she was sworn in as a member of the U.S. House, marking her as the first Republican woman to represent Texas. Additionally, she made history in January 2023 by becoming the first Republican woman to lead the House Appropriations Committee.

Representing Texas' 12th Congressional District for nearly 28 years, Granger retired in January 2025. As chair of the Appropriations Committee, she played a crucial role in determining federal funding, particularly for defense projects like the F-16 and F-35 fighter programs produced in Fort Worth.

In her later years, Granger faced health challenges, including living in a Fort Worth senior living facility since July 2024, where it was reported she dealt with dementia. Responses to her passing highlighted her impact, with figures like Senator Ted Cruz and Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker acknowledging her contributions to public service and her mentorship.
