Former Texas A&M standout and two-time NBA champion Alex Caruso returned to the Brazos Valley for the third Alex Caruso Foundation Charity Golf Tournament at Traditions Club. Proceeds from the event benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Brazos Valley, which Caruso attended while growing up in the area.
Caruso, an A&M Consolidated graduate, said the tournament is intended to support the community that helped him develop. “For me, I just wanted to make sure that I remembered the community that poured into me to help me get to the places that I am,” he said.
The Boys & Girls Clubs serves approximately 150 to 175 children each day and provides 20,000 meals a year through more than 15 youth programs. Funds from the tournament are expected to support a playground, a larger library and services involving homework assistance, study skills, college applications and daily meals.
During his visit, Caruso also reconnected with Texas A&M basketball staff members Darby Rich, Kyle Keller and Mitch Cole, who were involved in his college career. He said Keller recruited him, Rich encouraged his development and Cole helped him improve his shooting.
Caruso spoke positively about head coach Bucky McMillan after the Aggies reached the NCAA Tournament during McMillan’s first season. He also recently worked out with incoming A&M guard commit Chase Richardson, whom Caruso described as an athletic player capable of attacking the basket, creating opportunities and shooting effectively.
