City opens air-conditioned facilities for heat relief

City officials in College Station have made multiple air-conditioned municipal facilities available to the public in response to extreme heat. The city stated that heat index values are expected to reach dangerous levels across the Brazos Valley this week.

Residents whose home cooling systems are inadequate or who need a temporary break from outdoor temperatures are encouraged to use these public spaces to cool down and hydrate.

Several locations are open during normal business hours. The Ringer Library at 1818 Harvey Mitchell Parkway South is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. City Hall at 1101 Texas Avenue South operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Halter Nature Center at 3555 Rock Prairie Road West is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Lincoln Recreation Center at 1000 Eleanor Street is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Additionally, the Meyer Senior and Community Center at 2275 Dartmouth Street and the Southwood Community Center at 1520 Rock Prairie Road are both open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The city also outlined specific precautions for residents during periods of extreme weather. Officials advised drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even if not thirsty, while avoiding sugary, caffeinated, or alcoholic beverages. Residents are urged to frequently check on elderly neighbors, family members, and pets to ensure they have adequate cooling.

Public health guidance includes monitoring for signs of heat-related illness. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, and nausea. Heat stroke is identified as an emergency characterized by high body temperature, confusion, a rapid pulse, and a lack of sweating. The city stated that 911 should be called immediately if heat stroke is suspected.
