The window for individuals to register as candidates for mayor in Bryan and College Station closed at 5 p.m. on Monday, August 17. With the deadline now past, each municipality will have two contenders on the ballot for the upcoming general election scheduled for Tuesday, November 3.
In College Station, outgoing Mayor John Nichols is stepping down and will not seek another term. The race to succeed him features Bob Yancy and Elizabeth Cunha. Yancy currently holds a seat on the City Council, which he won in 2022, and plans to leave that position to pursue the mayoral office. Cunha previously held a council seat from 2020 through 2024.
Both College Station candidates have identified public safety as their primary focus according to information posted on their campaign websites. Yancy’s decision to run for mayor will create a vacancy on the City Council, necessitating a special election to fill his unexpired term. The filing deadline for that separate race is set for Thursday, August 20, at 6 p.m.
In Bryan, incumbent Mayor Bobby Gutierrez is seeking re-election. He first took office in 2022. His opponent is Rafael D. Pena III, a former City Council member who served from 2013 to 2016. The general election for both mayoral positions will take place on November 3.
