Texas A&M will begin Southeastern Conference play against Kentucky at Kyle Field, where former Aggies defensive coordinator Jay Bateman will return with the Wildcats. The game is scheduled for 2:30 on ESPN.
Bateman coached Texas A&M for two seasons before leaving for Kentucky. His return has drawn attention from players who worked with him, including cornerback Dezz Ricks and TJ Searcy, as Texas A&M’s defense prepares to face a Kentucky unit led by its former coordinator and a Wildcats offense known for emphasizing the run.
Ricks said he has known Bateman since eighth grade and that the coach recruited him for an extended period. “I have nothing bad to say about coach Bateman,” Ricks said, adding that he is looking forward to the matchup.
Searcy said Bateman helped him learn defensive concepts during his freshman season at Florida. Searcy also said this will be his third game against Kentucky and identified the Wildcats’ physical rushing attack as a primary focus.
Texas A&M is 2-0 after two games. Ricks said the defense has improved its communication and that additional film study has helped him react more quickly. He also credited players’ increased understanding of their assignments and their commitment to coach Elko’s program. Searcy attributed his early-season performance to consistent work at practice and in games.
