Aggie Fries is serving its signature food at the West Texas Fair and Rodeo in Abilene while raising money for student scholarships. The club has operated at the fair since 1948, making it the event’s longest-serving vendor.
James, an Aggie Fries Club member, said the organization sends all of its sales proceeds to scholarships for students in Taylor County and nearby counties. Since the club began selling fries at the fair, it has awarded slightly more than $750,000 in scholarships.
The club presented four scholarships this year. James said the work is personally meaningful because he received a scholarship nearly 30 years ago. “I was a scholarship recipient almost 30 years ago, and just to be able to help out and give back to somebody that I was in their shoes at one point in time, a long time ago,” he said.
Aggie Fries has become a longstanding part of the fair’s food court. James said the club expects returning customers and hopes people will purchase fries while supporting the scholarship program. A club member also said visitors have traveled from Germany to try the fries.
