Tommy Castellanos has accounted for three touchdowns and one interception in Texas Tech’s first two games, leaving his place in the offense unresolved. The veteran quarterback has appeared in selected situations with starter Will Hammond, producing both useful plays and a turnover.
Against Houston on Friday, Castellanos threw an interception on his first play while trying to put the pass out of bounds, Red Raiders Wire reported. He later came back into the game near the goal line and ran for a touchdown from 3 yards out.
Coach Joey McGuire said Hammond remains the Red Raiders’ starting quarterback, while also indicating that Texas Tech will keep using packages for Castellanos. Castellanos joined the team late in preseason camp as an emergency backup, after the transfer portal had closed and the situation involving Brendan Sorsby had ended. Hammond is recovering from a torn ACL, according to the report.
Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde listed Castellanos’ usage among 10 questions that could influence the college football season. Texas Tech has not determined how it will deploy him moving forward, including whether he will continue appearing in goal-line situations.
