Malik Davis is out for the season after a hip injury sustained Friday during a Cowboys practice, the team said. The injury required surgery later that night, and Dallas placed him on season-ending injured reserve.
Davis had won the No. 2 running back position behind Javonte Williams after competing for it through most of August. He performed well in training camp and the preseason, and the Cowboys expected him to contribute in their Sunday game against the Giants. The workout at The Star in Frisco was outdoors, non-contact and only a little more involved than a walk-through.
Davis was transported from the field by cart.
Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ chief operating officer, told 105.3 The Fan that the injury was disappointing for both Davis and the team. Jones said Davis had earned the backup spot through his work, leaving Dallas to depend on other players. The Cowboys signed veteran Emari Demercado for depth and special-teams help.
Israel Abanikanda, who is on the practice squad, could also take on a larger role. Dallas could elevate Abanikanda for the game or place him on the active roster.
