SMU senior Enzo Panozzo was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s co-defensive player of the week Tuesday, sharing the honor with Notre Dame’s Blake Kelly. SMU Athletics reported the award, which followed the Mustangs’ 1-0 result against NC State.
Panozzo, a Sarasota, Florida, native, captained SMU’s defense in its ACC home opener and scored the only goal. The Mustangs limited NC State to eight shots, with two on target, for their fifth shutout of the season. This is Panozzo’s first ACC weekly honor, while it gives SMU its second conference weekly award this season.
SMU moved to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll after the victory. The Mustangs have a 7-0-1 overall record and are 2-0-0 in conference play. Their next ACC match is scheduled for Sunday at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
