A Georgia appeals court recently granted the NCAA a stay on prior injunctions, a move that instantly impacts the status of five college basketball players. This legal shift disrupts the plans of athletes who had relied on state-specific rulings to claim an extra year of eligibility.

Among those affected is Jamichael Stillwell, a former UCF player who had recruited to Lubbock to join the Texas Tech program.

According to reporting by Jon Rothstein, the stay renders five key players ineligible: RJ Godfrey of Arizona, Chauncey Wiggins of Gonzaga, Jamichael Stillwell of Texas Tech, Dillon Hunter of Clemson, and Dan Skillings of Grand Canyon. Stillwell had secured his spot after Grant McCasland announced he would play a fifth year.

The initial eligibility was granted through a courtroom victory that allowed 2022 recruiting class athletes to use revised NCAA guidelines for an additional season. The NCAA has consistently challenged these decisions, seeking to reverse the rulings that provided the extra season.

This situation mirrors the recent experience of Donovan Atwell, another Texas Tech player who was halted by a stay granted in Colorado. Atwell is currently pursuing a temporary injunction in Lubbock County with a hearing scheduled for October 15. Stillwell had previously sought a personal injunction in Georgia rather than relying on the broader Colorado ruling.

The source notes that Atwell may now attempt a similar legal strategy in Texas, as no stay has yet been issued within that state. The outcome of these legal battles remains uncertain, and the Texas Tech program is working to resolve these issues before the season begins.
