A projection for the Dallas Cowboys’ season opener at the New York Giants puts the game’s combined-points line at 48.5. Nick Harris selected Dallas to win but forecast a lower-scoring result, pointing to the team’s experience, the opening week and possible weather conditions.
Dallas signed Israel Abanikanda from its practice squad after Malik Davis suffered a hip injury requiring surgery. Abanikanda is expected to be the Cowboys’ third running back. Davis had been behind Javonte Williams on the depth chart and was competing with Jaydon Blue.
Dallas waived Blue after the preseason, then claimed Emari Demercado from Kansas City. Demercado is expected to back up Williams against New York. Fullback Hunter Luepke is also on the roster.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer said DeMarvion Overshown will handle much of the communication-helmet work for defensive calls, though other players are ready if defensive packages require a change. The Cowboys are evaluating offensive-line options, including veteran tackle D.J. Humphries, whom Washington released.
Arizona drafted Humphries 24th overall in 2015, and he became a full-time starter in 2016 before dealing with injuries through 2023. Blogging The Boys also reported that Ryan Flournoy’s contract has a $1.5 million base salary, a $500,000 roster bonus and $1.25 million in unallocated signing-bonus proration.
