Dare Ogunbowale is returning to the Houston Texans’ 53-man roster before Week 4, giving the team four running backs as it prepares to host the Dallas Cowboys. Ogunbowale spent the 2022 through 2025 seasons with Houston, appearing in more than 60 games before his short stay with the Raiders.
His primary work came on special teams, where he totaled more than 1,000 snaps over those four seasons. He also had 91 rushing attempts for 295 yards and three touchdowns. Ogunbowale was a Texans team captain last season, and head coach DeMeco Ryans has repeatedly praised him, according to the report.
David Montgomery and Woody Marks are expected to handle most of Houston’s offensive snaps at running back. British Brooks could remain ahead of Ogunbowale in the weekly order, so the veteran is not expected to immediately alter the team’s top offensive options. The reason for the signing was not clear.
The Texans could be preparing for a possible injury, although Week 4 player injury information was not expected until after Wednesday’s practice, or seeking an experienced depth player for special teams. Sports Illustrated reported that Ogunbowale provides leadership and special-teams experience.
