Brazos County commissioners have a full morning ahead. The Commissioners Court's regular meeting starts at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, and the posted agenda runs from a look at where the county's population is headed to a closed-door discussion about Easterwood Airport.

The meeting will not be in the usual courtroom. Because of construction at the Brazos County Administration Building, the court is meeting through December in the training room of the Brazos County Medical Examiner's Office, 3037 E. 29th St. in Bryan, according to a county notice posted Oct. 1. It will also stream on the county's YouTube channel.

Two presentations on growth

Tom Johnson, president and CEO of the Greater Brazos Partnership, is scheduled to present on the county's past and future growth. After that, the planning firm Freese and Nichols will brief the court on its update of the county's subdivision regulations, the rules that govern how land outside city limits is divided and developed.

Those rules were last rewritten in 2016, and more than 50,000 people have moved into the county since then, KBTX reported in April. At a workshop that month, some commissioners pushed back on the consultant's draft.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Fred Brown called parts of it confusing compared with the 2016 version, and Precinct 2 Commissioner Chuck Konderla said builders need a standard that does not shift once a project is underway. Commissioners asked for a side-by-side comparison of the old and proposed rules.

Wildfire planning and an airport contract

The first item on the regular agenda is Resolution 26-018, which urges county residents to take part in developing a Brazos County Community Wildfire Protection Plan under the federal Healthy Forests Restoration Act. The item lands during Fire Prevention Week, which began Sunday.

Commissioners also plan to go into executive session to deliberate on a contract being negotiated involving Easterwood Airport, the Texas A&M-owned airport in College Station. Any action would have to be taken after the court returns to open session. The agenda gives no further detail.

Pay, benefits and grants

Other items include renewing the county's self-funded medical, prescription, stop-loss and dental plans through the Texas Association of Counties pool for 2027, and renewing workers' compensation coverage for the same year. The sheriff's office is seeking approval to join Bryan and College Station in the 2026 Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program, a regional grant the College Station City Council also has on its Thursday agenda.

The district attorney's office has several pay requests. One would raise an assistant district attorney position from $3,665.77 to $4,615.38 every two weeks starting in January. The 361st District Court is asking to rename the juvenile court referee position as juvenile associate judge.

The agenda also notes that the county's adopted budget for fiscal 2027 has been published on the county website.
