Drivers heading north on Highway 6 through College Station after dark this week will be forced off the freeway for one stretch. The Texas Department of Transportation plans a full closure of the northbound main lanes between Harvey Mitchell Parkway and Harvey Road every night from Sunday, Nov. 1, through Friday, Nov. 6.
Each closure runs from 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. the next morning, according to the agency's construction schedule for the Big 6 project. Northbound drivers will be routed off at the Harvey Mitchell Parkway exit and can rejoin the freeway at the on-ramp just south of Harvey Road.
Two other northbound on-ramps, one below Harvey Mitchell Parkway and one below Southwest Parkway, will be shut during the same hours.
Other overnight closures this week
The northbound detour is not the only restriction on the schedule:
- Southbound main lanes, Harvey Road to Harvey Mitchell Parkway: the left lane closes overnight Sunday through Thursday, first for paving and then for earthwork.
- Northbound frontage road, Harvey Road to University Drive: the left lane closes overnight Sunday through Wednesday and again Friday. On those nights drivers also lose the University Drive exit and the on-ramp below University Drive, and frontage road traffic can get back onto the freeway below Briarcrest Drive.
- Northbound main lanes, University Drive to Briarcrest Drive: the left lane closes Tuesday night so crews can adjust traffic barrier.
- Northbound frontage road, Barron Road to Midtown Drive: the right lane closes Thursday night for drainage work, and the Rock Prairie Road exit going north is shut. TxDOT says drivers can reach Rock Prairie Road by taking the Barron Road exit instead.
All of the listed closures run on the same 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. schedule.
