Families who want a night in a tent without a long drive have two chances this month at Lick Creek Park.

College Station Parks and Recreation is bringing back Lick Creek Park in the Dark, an overnight campout based at the Gary Halter Nature Center. The first is Friday, Nov. 6, and the second is Friday, Nov. 13. Each runs from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. the next morning.

What the night includes

Campers can stay at their own site or join the scheduled activities, which the city says include a hot dog dinner, s'mores, games and nature programs. If the weather cooperates, the Brazos Valley Astronomy Club plans to set up telescopes for stargazing.

Volunteers from the Brazos Valley Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist will lead a look at the park after dark, the Texas A&M Entomology Club will bring live invertebrates, and the Rio Brazos Audubon Society will guide a hike in search of nocturnal animals.

Cost and registration

The fee is $8 per person, and children 3 and younger camp free. Anyone under 18 must come with an adult. Registration closes on the Wednesday before each campout, which makes the deadlines Nov. 4 for the first night and Nov. 11 for the second. The city says space is limited.

Pets and alcohol are not allowed.

What to pack

Campers bring their own tent, food, snacks and drinks. The city suggests sleeping bags, flashlights, a lantern for the tent, bug spray and folding chairs, and extra batteries, since the site has no electricity. People without camping gear can rent equipment through Texas A&M's Outdoor Adventures program, according to the city.

Questions go to the Gary Halter Nature Center at 979-764-6216 or parks@cstx.gov.
