The South Brazos County Fire Department invited the public to a grand opening and barbecue fundraiser Monday at Station 1, its new home on Koppe Bridge Road west of Wellborn.

The station at 6055 Koppe Bridge Road is the new headquarters of Brazos County Emergency Services District 1, the taxing district that runs the fire department in the southern part of the county.

The district posted a notice on Dec. 23, 2025, announcing it had moved there, and Monday's event, from 4 to 8 p.m., was billed on the district's flyer as the station's grand opening and a barbecue chicken fundraiser for the department.

The building

At the September 2025 groundbreaking, district commission president Rodger Stout told WTAW the district had bought land that came with an existing metal building, which would mostly get interior work, and that a second building would be built to hold four fire vehicles.

He said the station, at 15,638 square feet, would have a kitchen, living quarters, nine dorm rooms, a workout room, offices, rooms for meetings and training, and a separate area for cleaning and storing gear, which he said was meant to cut firefighters' cancer risk.

A state accessibility registration for the project, filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, lists the district as owner, an estimated cost of $5 million in public funds and a status of inspection complete.

Stout said in 2025 that the old Station 1, off Wellborn Road inside College Station city limits, would be sold. Chief David Cooper said at the time that he wanted residents of the district to use the new station's meeting rooms.

More stations coming

The district broke ground in July on another station along Highway 6, KBTX reported. That 7,117-square-foot building is scheduled to be finished in late 2027 and will be staffed around the clock by a four-person crew, Cooper told the station.

Bentley Nettles, the county commissioner for Precinct 1, said at that event that the district is shifting from volunteers to paid round-the-clock crews as rural parts of the county keep growing.

Cooper said in 2025 that with the new stations, the district expects response times on 90% of its calls to fall from about 20 minutes to 10 minutes.
