A robbery reported last week at Texas A&M's West Campus Garage never took place, University Police now say.

The department issued a crime alert after receiving a report at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, that a member of the Corps of Cadets had been hit with pepper spray on Level 1 of the garage and that the cadet's freshman spurs had been taken.

The alert included a description of a suspect and said investigators believed cadets wearing the bottle-cap spurs were being targeted, KBTX reported at the time.

In an update released Monday, University Police said their investigation found that no robbery took place and that the report involved no danger to people on campus, according to KBTX. WTAW reported that police concluded the account had been fabricated.

Assistant Chief Bobby Richardson told WTAW the case will be referred to the Brazos County District Attorney's office. No charge had been announced as of Monday night, and the university has not identified the student who made the report.

WTAW reported that the matter will also be handled under the university's student conduct rules. Whether the Corps of Cadets will take its own action has not been made public.

The suspect description in the original alert no longer applies to any reported crime.
