A Blue Bell Creameries sales meeting, a training school for newly elected county officials and three sports and training events are lined up for College Station hotel tax money in 2027, if the city's Tourism Committee goes along with its staff on Wednesday.

The committee meets at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the Bush 4141 Community Room at City Hall, 1101 Texas Ave., with a Microsoft Teams option for remote viewers. The five grant requests, which total $85,000, sit on the consent agenda, so members can approve them in a single vote unless someone asks to pull one out. Staff recommends each one.

What is on the list

Figures below come from staff evaluation forms in the meeting packet.

  • Blue Bell Creameries 2027 General Sales Meeting, Jan. 25 to 27 at The George Hotel: $5,000. Staff describes the Brenham ice cream maker as a first-time group, expects about 160 employees and 220 room nights, and estimates $118,139 in direct spending. Staff notes the company also holds regional gatherings and executive workshops quarterly and sees the city as a strong candidate to host more of them. The amount is the most the guidelines allow for a convention of that size.
  • Seminar for Newly Elected County Judges and Commissioners, run by the V.G. Young Institute of County Government, Jan. 18 to 22 at the Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center: $20,000, up from $15,000 in 2025. About 250 officials and 732 room nights are projected.
  • Williams Fire and Hazard Control's Xtreme Industrial Fire and Hazard Training, June 6 to 11 at the Hilton College Station and the TEEX Brayton Fire Field: $30,000, the same amount awarded in each of the last three years. Staff projects 300 attendees and 1,400 room nights.
  • Aggieland Classic Lacrosse Tournament, hosted by the Texas A&M men's lacrosse club, Feb. 6 and 7 at the Penberthy Rec Sports Complex: $10,000. Organizers expect 70 teams and about 2,500 players and spectators. The 2026 tournament was called off because of weather.
  • Texas Youth 7v7 State Championships, May 21 to 23 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex: $20,000, the full request and up from $5,000 in both 2024 and 2025. The event now combines three championships, and organizers expect 215 teams and 10,290 players and spectators. Staff says the grant would help pay game officials, trainers and security and cover field costs.

The budget behind it

The money comes out of the city's hotel tax fund as part of tourism spending. A funding summary in the packet shows $943,860 budgeted for grants this fiscal year, with $210,500 already committed and $733,210 still available before Wednesday's votes. Last fiscal year the city paid out $607,150 against the same budget.

A scoring tool for future events

Members will also be asked to adopt an event scoring matrix, which the committee's destination strategic plan recommends as the standard yardstick for events seeking support from Visit College Station.
