Volunteers who want to honor local veterans before Wednesday's Veterans Day can show up Saturday morning at College Station's Memorial Cemetery, where Wreaths Across America plans to place flags on veterans' graves.
The work starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the cemetery and its Aggie Field of Honor section near Easterwood Airport, organizer Ellen Fuller told KBTX. Volunteers do not need to register ahead of time. Organizers will have tools and water on hand, along with clementines for the crews.
Finding each grave
The group is trying something new this year to help volunteers find the right headstones. Each helper will get a bundle of 10 flags and 10 laminated sheets, one per veteran, showing a photo of the person, a picture of the headstone and a small map of where it sits on the grounds, according to KBTX. The details come from the Find a Grave database.
Fuller told the station that Wreaths Across America works with Mary Shearer of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who keeps a list of about 6,000 veteran graves across Brazos County. The aim, she said, is to make the graves easier to locate and to put a face with each name.
