A 59-year-old Brazos County woman was found dead of a gunshot wound Wednesday night, and the man investigators identified as the suspect died hours later in Harris County, the Brazos County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies were sent to a residence on Trace Bend, in the 6400 block, on Sept. 30 after a request to check on someone's welfare. There, they found Veronica Tussey-Taylor dead, according to the sheriff's office.

How deputies traced the suspect

Investigators learned that Tussey-Taylor's vehicle was gone from the home and named John Goodwin, 54, of College Station, as a suspect. In a release, the sheriff's office said automated license plate readers, including Flock cameras, tracked the vehicle out of the county toward Houston.

A state Department of Public Safety helicopter later found the vehicle at a property north of Houston, in Harris County. Deputies from Brazos County kept watch from an unmarked vehicle while Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies responded. According to the sheriff's office, Goodwin took his own life before deputies went onto the property, and officers confirmed he was dead when they found him.

Investigation continues

The sheriff's office said Tussey-Taylor and Goodwin knew each other but did not describe their relationship. The Brazos County and Harris County sheriff's offices and DPS are continuing to investigate.

"Our thoughts are with the victim's family, and everyone affected by this tragic incident," the sheriff's office said.
