Astros Strike First
The Houston Astros overcame an early deficit to defeat the New York Mets 6-3 on Sunday at Citi Field. The game featured significant power hitting from both sides, with the away team ultimately capitalizing on their opportunities in the late innings. The Astros finished the contest with a record of 69-68, while the Mets dropped to 61-76.
Home Run Exchange
The scoring began quickly in the top of the first inning. Yordan Alvarez homered to center for 435 feet, giving Houston a 1-0 lead. The Mets responded immediately in the bottom half of the first. Francisco Lindor hit a 383-foot home run to right to tie the game, followed by a 396-foot shot to center by Juan Soto that put New York ahead 2-1. The Astros tied it again in the second inning when Jose Altuve singled to center, allowing Diaz to score and Allen to reach third.
Late-Inning Surge
Houston took the lead for good in the fifth inning. A ground ball by Torrens resulted in a double play, but Ewing scored on the play, making it 2-2. In the sixth, Wade Jr. hit a 409-foot home run to right, driving in Diaz to give the Astros a 4-3 advantage. The final two runs of the game came in the seventh. A ground out by Varsho to first was followed by a throwing error by first baseman Young, which allowed Altuve and Paredes to score, extending the lead to 6-3. Walker also reached third safely on the error.
Pitching Performance
Ethan Pecko earned the win for Houston, pitching five innings while allowing three hits and two earned runs. He struck out four batters and walked two. AJ Blubaugh provided two scoreless innings, striking out two. Bryan Abreu, Steven Okert, and Josh Hader combined for the final outs, with Hader securing the save. For the Mets, Zac Thornton took the loss, pitching five innings while surrendering six hits and two earned runs. He recorded five strikeouts. Jonathan Pintaro, Jefry Yan, Austin Warren, and Chris Devenski pitched the remaining innings for New York.
