Drew McMillen began his long career in sports administration in 1991 as a graduate student at Texas A&M University. He was initially recommended to assist with data entry for a volleyball match due to his proficiency with computer systems. That single assignment launched a 35-year tenure working stat crews for Texas A&M and College Station ISD athletics.
McMillen’s responsibilities have expanded significantly since those early days. He started as a substitute operator for Aggie men’s and women’s basketball before joining the university crew full-time. In the mid-1990s, he began covering football games. Approximately five years ago, he added baseball duties following the implementation of the pitch clock at the collegiate level. Most recently, he began managing scoreboards for softball games.
His work extends well beyond the university campus. During the 2000s, McMillen took on play clock operations for A&M Consolidated High School football. He later expanded to sub-varsity Thursday night games before moving those duties to College Station High School. There, he eventually became the sub-varsity public address announcer and also operates the clock for the Cougars boys basketball team.
McMillen is scheduled through the Texas Association of Sports Officials. While his primary focus remains College Station ISD events, he accepts assignments at other locations as well. He also serves as an occasional public address announcer for middle school and high school track meets.
The nature of his work varies by season. McMillen works no games during the summer weekdays. During peak periods in November or February, when multiple sports seasons overlap, he may work five or six nights a week. This week, his schedule includes a JV football game on Thursday, a varsity high school contest on Friday, and the Texas A&M football season opener against Mississippi State.
