A letter signed by Brenda Lee of College Station addressed Governor Greg Abbott’s recent proposals regarding religious instruction in public schools. Lee wrote that Abbott has announced plans to display the Ten Commandments in every Texas classroom and mandate Bible study for elementary, middle, and high school students within four years.
She argued that such measures would provide a moral foundation for youth facing online dangers like social media and the dark web. Lee expressed hope that these regulations might eventually extend to all 50 states.
Another submission came from John Kamenec of Fort Worth, who responded to comments about the Great Lakes. Kamenec noted that students traditionally use the acronym HOMES to remember the lakes' names. He suggested replacing it with SHAME in reference to former President Donald Trump, stating that this new acronym would be more meaningful when considering Lake America.
Cathy Murphree of Richardson wrote about uncertainty surrounding vote-by-mail rules for upcoming midterm elections following a recent Supreme Court ruling. She described Texas as ranking last among states for ease of voter registration and voting. Murphree highlighted the difficulties residents face, including mandatory paper forms, unexpected purges of voter rolls, and strict identification requirements that exclude some accepted IDs like college photo cards.
