Researchers from Texas A&M University and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have completed a new assessment of air quality across Texas, identifying pollutants and sources that differ significantly from those documented in the early 2000s. The Texas Air Quality Study (TexAQS) marks the first major investigation of the state’s air at this scale in two decades.
The study utilized NOAA research aircraft to sample air above major cities, oil-producing regions, and power plants. On the ground, scientists operated mobile laboratories and monitoring stations in Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and the Permian Basin. The campaign spans Texas and New Mexico, aiming to understand how the state’s pollution landscape has evolved as technologies, industries, and daily habits have changed.
Dr. Yue Zhang, an assistant professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M, leads the project for the university. Zhang noted that previous studies on urban air pollution were largely conducted in northern metropolitan areas such as New York and Los Angeles. However, Texas presents distinct conditions, including higher temperatures, different weather patterns, and unique industrial and consumer habits.
“Much of what we know about emerging urban air pollution comes from studies in places like New York, Los Angeles and Colorado,” Zhang said. “But Texas cities have different climates, different temperatures and different emission sources. We want to understand what air pollution looks like here rather than assume it behaves the same way.”
While regulations and technological improvements have reduced emissions from traditional combustion sources like vehicle exhaust and industrial smokestacks, researchers are finding that other contributors are playing larger roles. A key focus of the study is volatile chemical products (VCPs), which are compounds released from everyday items such as perfumes, shampoos, deodorants, cosmetics, and cleaning agents.
