The defense attorney representing Jacob Fields, a former football player at TCU, asserts that the coaching staff was aware of growing tensions on the practice field before a locker room altercation on August 13. Fields faces an aggravated assault charge after allegedly injuring teammate Dozie Ezukanma, who was hospitalized for three days due to a brain bleed.
Attorney Coby DuBose contests assertions in the arrest warrant affidavit, which claims Fields sucker-punched Ezukanma. DuBose argues that Fields approached Ezukanma to greet him prior to the incident. He emphasizes that Fields had previously communicated his frustrations about rough treatment during practices, stating that he had informed the coaching staff about being subjected to cheap shots.
DuBose believes the coaching staff did not take the situation seriously enough and could have intervened to prevent the fight. He described the events leading to the altercation as exceeding typical football roughness, mentioning instances of spitting and illegal hits. Fields’ agent, Phillip “Red” Miller, echoed DuBose's concerns, indicating that there was unnecessary aggression during practices.
In contrast, a source from the TCU football program disputed these claims, and athletic director Mike Buddie indicated that the coaching staff handled the situation appropriately. The source, who requested to remain anonymous due to the ongoing investigation, expressed skepticism about the narratives put forth by DuBose and Miller.
Further details regarding the investigation and the actions of the coaching staff remain unclear as developments continue.
