The Dallas Cowboys have waived quarterback Joe Milton. This decision was made on Monday after Milton competed for the backup quarterback role throughout the offseason. He joined the Cowboys in April 2025 when the team traded a fifth-round pick to the New England Patriots for him.

Earlier that day, the Cowboys added running back Emari Demercado, who was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs. This move required the team to release Milton to maintain a 53-man roster.

During the 2026 preseason, Milton participated in three games, completing 29 out of 43 passes for 378 yards, achieving three touchdowns without any interceptions. He also rushed 12 times for 14 yards and scored a rushing touchdown.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer noted the importance of understanding the team's intricate offensive system, which can be challenging for quarterbacks. Milton expressed that he felt increasingly comfortable with the Cowboys' offense after a full season and a second training camp.

With Milton's exit, the Cowboys' quarterback roster now includes Dak Prescott and Sam Howell. Milton is subject to waivers, and should he go unclaimed, he might have a chance to join the team's practice squad.
