Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver at TCU, was hospitalized for three days due to a brain bleed, a concussion, and additional injuries stemming from an alleged assault by teammate Jacob Fields. This incident reportedly took place on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex.
Fields, dissatisfied with Ezukanma's practice performance, allegedly struck him in the head while Ezukanma was seated and using his phone. After the initial blow, witnesses reported that Fields kicked Ezukanma in the back of the head, leading to his loss of consciousness. Ezukanma later recounted to police that his memories were limited to being in the training room and inquiring about what had occurred.
Following the incident, Ezukanma experienced severe headaches and ringing in his ears, prompting his hospitalization. Scans confirmed a brain bleed, which resulted in his transfer to the ICU. He underwent several CT scans during his treatment, with one indicating that the hematoma had increased in size. He was discharged on August 16, also suffering from a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Jacob Fields was removed from the team on August 18 and subsequently turned himself in to law enforcement, facing charges of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was released from jail after posting a $50,000 bond. Following the incident, Fields expressed regret in a text message to TCU police, stating that he made an emotional decision and offered to pay for Ezukanma's hospital expenses.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes commented on the incident, describing it as uncharacteristic for both the team and Fields. Ezukanma, a former student at Keller Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, was anticipated to be a starting wide receiver for the upcoming season, with TCU's next game against Grambling set for September 12.
