Jared Nuness, who spent over a decade as an assistant coach for Baylor's basketball team, has been handed a two-year show cause penalty by the NCAA due to sports betting violations. Nuness, the longest-serving assistant under head coach Scott Drew, resigned from his position in December, citing personal health concerns as his reason for leaving.
In his resignation statement, Nuness expressed appreciation for his time at Baylor, stating that being part of the program was a significant honor in his career. He emphasized that prioritizing his health was a crucial factor in his decision to step down.
The NCAA's investigation found that Nuness participated in unauthorized sports betting activities while working at Baylor. From December 29, 2020, to November 28, 2025, he reportedly placed approximately 3,400 bets, amounting to around $38,000 on professional sports. He also permitted his son to utilize his betting accounts, which led to three bets totaling $170 on college competitions, none of which involved Baylor's programs.
Nuness accepted full accountability for these infractions, which the NCAA categorized as Level II violations. This case underscores ongoing issues surrounding sports betting in college athletics, as Nuness is not the only individual to encounter penalties for similar infractions.
