The SMU Mustangs are set to enhance their receiving corps with the addition of two new transfers: Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina. This move comes after the team lost its top two receivers, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who combined for over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.

Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with key offensive players, including tight ends Matthew Hibner and RJ Maryland. Despite these setbacks, both Hale and Smith have shown promise in fall camp. Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins praised Smith's ability to make contested catches, while also highlighting Hale's speed and elusiveness.

Hale, a former five-star recruit, has bounced back from a severe knee injury that kept him out of the entire 2024 season and is now showcasing his playmaking skills at SMU. Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's SEC experience and toughness as valuable assets for the team.

Smith brings over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from East Carolina, known for his aggressive play style.

As the Mustangs prepare for their season opener against Florida State on September 7, the team is focused on building chemistry and solidifying their depth chart. The competitive environment created by Hale and Smith is expected to enhance the overall performance of the team.
